Iain Porter, service designer, UXDC

About Iain

Interested in the problem. Invested in the people.

I work where different accounts of a service need to become a shared understanding of what to do next.

My background spans psychology, independent design and development, enterprise UX and service design. That breadth helps me ask questions across disciplines and understand how decisions in one part of a system affect another.

I’m based in Glasgow. My work has included healthcare, government, financial services, scientific organisations and smaller independent clients.

How I make myself useful.

  • Learn the domain with the people who know it.

At RoS, that meant understanding registration work as well as the solicitor’s experience. In the NHS, it meant working with clinical, operational and technical specialists.

  • Give people something concrete to examine.

A model, prototype or shared design reference makes assumptions and disagreements easier to discuss. It also exposes what I have misunderstood.

  • Connect the choice to the work that follows.

My contribution can extend from research and modelling into detailed design, requirements and implementation support. Independent product work keeps that connection practical.

A background in understanding and making.

MA Psychology, First Class Honours, University of Glasgow, with an exchange at UC Berkeley.

I began independent digital work in 1999, taking responsibility for client relationships, design and software delivery. Enterprise engagements broadened that into research, organisational systems and multidisciplinary change.
